Retired jet engines spark debate over power source for AI data centres

The retired military aircraft stored at the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, known as the Boneyard, have emerged as proposed potential sources of power for AI data centers. These engines could theoretically produce up to 40,000 MW, exceeding Arizona's current supply. However, this figure represents an estimate based on theoretical calculations, not actual deployable power. The greatest potential lies in turbofan engines, which could yield around 32,000 MW, although they face challenges from cost and efficiency compared to dedicated power turbines. Moreover, turboprop and turboshaft engines have much lower output potential and present significant logistical hurdles. Overall, while the concept presents a novel idea amid energy scarcity, it is unlikely to serve as a viable solution for large-scale power generation in the near future.
